Collage as a technique also reminds us that truth is not a solid thing that resides in a specific place, it takes on different forms and measures, it is omnipresent, in objects, in language, it changes with the change of perception used, it is of free yet impure nature: what else can a collage state if not that truth can be re-written umpteenth times?

Deviating from her prolific painting practice, recent experiments with collage and mixed media reveal new and dynamic developments within the artist’s body of work. Still fixated on the gravity of the human face, she clips images from the pages of glossy magazines and forges a narrative around them, letting the expressions on the faces guide her storytelling.

here are a multitude of things flying and colliding in Noor Bahjat’s head that, if manifested as tangible bursts of pigment, patches of light or plaits and knits of intertwined color, her mind will resemble a riotous, vivid patchwork of endless quilt.

Quilts are made of patches of seamed and stitched cloth and without such stiches and seams, which bind and join, the patchwork falls helplessly apart. Now, under a more minute deduction we know that cloth is made of thread. Weft and warp, hand in hand, on and on, and over and over again until this weave, deceptively insubstantial and uninteresting at first, becomes whole cloth. Thus, in its basic beginning, it is essentially miles and miles of intertwined thread, much like how our bodies are made of countless cells that make up tissues, that make up muscles that make up organs that make up our humanity and mortality and therefore makeup our life, and ultimately, our death.

In response to the impact of the Syrian war, Noor crafted a series rich in symbolism. It includes a globe, skull, flowers, wine bottles, food, and a clock.

A figure gazes at the viewer, its expression intentionally blank, capturing the harshness of life during the conflict. These symbols collectively convey the multifaceted human experience in times of war, from global implications to mortality, hope, scarcity, and the relentless passage of time.

Noor's series serves as a poignant reflection on the complexities of life in the midst of adversity, allowing viewers to connect with the profound emotions and realities of those affected by conflict.

Using the face as the point of departure for her paintings, the young artist is preoccupied with the desire to represent the very essence of a person through their portrait. Working loosely from multiple sketches and self-portraits, she uses detailed line work and saturated washes of colour, creating atmospheric compositions interspersed with recurring, allegorical objects. A globe represents human existence; a shiny black crow signifies wisdom, and flowers symbolize hope. In addition, ghostly apparitions and sinister animal-headed figures lend a supernatural quality to several of Bahjat’s works.
